Basically, how to forecast packaging needs in Odoo ?
In Odoo, Packaging (the UoM) is different from Packages
- In packaging,
- UoM is defined at the product level
- We sell by Pack (pack of 6, pack of 12)
- But packages
- are physical containers (boxes, pallets)
- are used in warehouse operations via the feature “Put in Pack”
It’s important to know that Odoo forecasting is based on UoM
- 1 Unit → 1L bottle water
- 1 Pack of 12 → 12 x 1L bottle water
- 5 Pack of 12 → 60 bottles of water
👉 As a result, if inventory is tracked in Units, forecasting will show 60 units instead of 5 packs (that is the problem → we don’t have packaging forecast in that case)
The broken package problem
- If T-A uses glass bottles
- they have 100 glass bottles in stock
- and 3 bottles are broken,
- inventory will show 97 bottles
- Pack of 12 → 8.08 packs
👉 The pack will be fractional and that will be confusing (another problem)
The solution is to use Units across the inventory
But forecast will not show the packs
We need a custom packaging forecast
- We track individual products by Unit
- We forecast in packaging
How Odoo forecasting works
|
Forecasted Stock = On Hand + Incoming - Outgoing |
Explanation:
- On Hand: what we have physically in stock
- Outgoing: confirmed sales orders
- Incoming: confirmed purchase orders, confirmed manufacturing orders
If we have
- 6 bottles on Hand
- 12 bottles incoming
- 6 outgoing
- Forecasted Stock = 12 bottles (Units)
|
Forecasted Packages = Forecasted Stock ÷ Pack Size |
If we have
- Forecasted Stock = 12 bottles
- Pack Size = 6
- Forecasted Packages = 2
